Annie Koehlinger is a strong waters sports enthusiast and considers surfing and wakeboarding to be her favorites. Although she is passionate about these water sports, she does not feel inclined to compete professionally since she mainly likes to perform them as a hobby. Annie Koehlinger has realized, however, that each sport requires athletes to complete extensive training in order to improve their skill set, exertion, and strength. Whether an athlete is inexperienced or a prize winning professional, Annie Koehlinger believes that participants should learn to prioritize technique and safety measures. In order to avoid the dangers of performing on water, athletes wishing to explore surfing and wakeboarding further must familiarize themselves with the correct equipment, sporting gear, and basic steps.
When it comes to choosing a surfboard, which is the main piece of equipment, Annie Koehlinger
advises riders to ensure the board comes with a leash to secure the rider’s ankle in position. She also recommends surfers purchase board shorts or a surfing wetsuit for necessary protection from the force of the waves. Before Annie Koehlinger goes in the water she starts off by practicing the proper position in which surfers lay on the surfboard. Once she has practiced this enough times, she swims deep into the ocean and lays horizontally on the surfboard in an attempt to “catch a wave.” Annie Koehlinger must then start to paddle towards the breaking wave while matching the wave’s speed to gain momentum. After achieving the proper placement of her palms, feet, and legs, she is able to stand on the surfboard and ride.
A life vest is the single most important piece of gear a wakeboard rider should invest in to avoid the dangers of getting thrown into deep water. Annie Koehlinger suggests riders choose their life vest carefully and also ask for help when choosing a wakeboard because the necessary size and binding depend on a rider’s skill set. She believes that once riders have acquired the proper gear and equipment, they are ready to hit the water. When Annie Koehlinger is ready to go wakeboarding, she mounts her wakeboard by checking to make sure she is tightly secured to the back of the motorboat’s cable system, keeping a firm grip on the handlebars, and balancing on the wakeboard before the navigator starts the engine. She is then able to perform high jumps and advanced sliding techniques as the boat gains speed and starts to make sharp turns.
